San Antonio Area College Fairs (Oct. 25-28)

Attention High School Students in the San Antonio Area!  It's time to get out and meet college representatives in order to plan your college visits.  Here are a few fairs happening this week.

College Fairs Dates and Times are as follows:

Monday, October 25- Alamo Heights High School, 6:30-8 p.m.

Monday, October 25-Northside ISD at the UTSA Campus Recreation Facility, 6-8:30 p.m.

Tuesday, October 26- Judson ISD Fair at Wagner High School, 6-7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, October 27- Northeast ISD Fair at Blossom Athletic Center, 6-8 p.m.
Thursday, October 28- Private School Fair at St. Mary's University, 7-9 p.m. 

o   When you attend College Fairs, have the following information available for the recruiters:

·   Current GPA and class rank, if available

·   Test Scores or When you will complete your ACT or SAT

·   Schools you MUST visit: some lines may be long, but do your best to wait to speak with somebody and complete an information card

Busy Busy Busy

It seems that the month of October is always crazy for people in college and students preparing to go to college.  It's been 3 weeks since I posted a blog and I'm not in college!!! I did take a trip to the OU/TX Red River Rivalry Game to see my friends and loved it.  Awww, the good ole days of being at college football games and tailgating all fall.

October usually means Mid-terms, Homecoming, Football Season, College Fairs, etc.  But when I was a freshmen in college, it was also the time that I really started to miss being at home.  Being 7 hours away from home with no car, I was really wishing to have some food cooked by mom, to lay in my own bed, and to just be in my comfort zone.  So stay busy if that's you!!

A few tips to stay Busy:

• If you have a fall break, catch up on all the things you haven't done; like those journal entries or chapter readings or scholarship applications.  
• Homesick? Use Skype to talk to friends and family not around you- it's free!  All you need is a webcam/mic and set up an account.
• Go to a Sports event: Football, Soccer, Volleyball... it's all going on in October.  Find out if you get free tickets as a student and wear your favorite school spirit shirt.
• Workout!! Before the holiday food sneaks up on you, take walks with your friends around campus or check out the gym now that all the people who "thought" they'd workout all the time have stopped.  Maybe that was you!
• High School Students... plan a college visit!  October and November are crazy times on college campuses and the best time to visit and see if that school is where you want to be.  Schedule a tour or attend one of the annual High School Days.

Don't get caught up in "staying in" if there are things you need to do.  Colder weather and shorter days cause everyone to begin hibernating.  Stay busy, get involved, and prepare for upcoming midterms and projects.  Keep it up!!

Why Should You Study Abroad?

Year after year college students partake in one of the most exciting and unforgettable opportunities they will only have while in college: study abroad. I am a two time study abroad participant who spent a month in China (where I never imagined going!) and an entire school year in Limoges, France learning about French language and culture. That’s all great and good but why should you consider studying abroad? Well here are my reasons to do it:

1. It’s probably the only time in YOUR LIFE where you’ll get to leave everything for a month, semester, or year to live in place completely different from what you are used to.
2. Being exposed to different cultures, people, and places expands your cultural understanding and gives you the social advantage of being able to relate to people who are different from you.
3. You might take up a new language as well as learn to appreciate what it’s like to be in a place where you are not understood and where your communication skills are challenged.
4. The skills you obtain as you navigate through foreign governmental and educational systems help you appreciate how easy/hard things might be at home and maybe how those might be improved.
5. There are scholarships and financial aid that help you partake in this once-in-a-life-time opportunity, so money is not a huge obstacle.
6. If you do your research and speak to your advisor, you will be able to earn college credit for the courses you take abroad.
7. The personal growth and professional benefits one obtains from studying abroad are immensely helpful and will serve you for the rest of your life.
8. Your friends and the memories you make will be with you forever (cheesy but true).
9. You’ll be so proud of the courage and strength you never knew you had, especially during rough times when all you wanted to do was run home to what was comfortable, safe, and easy.

Studying abroad was the one of the best college choices I ever made and I hope you will consider the opportunity to challenge yourself and grow in ways you never imagined you could.

Mayra Olivares-Urueta is a doctoral student at the University of North Texas in the Higher Education program. Mayra's research and professional interests include Latino student access to higher education, parent involvement in the higher education process, and Latino student retention and degree attainment. Mayra received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Oklahoma in European Studies, Spanish, and Human Relations. Mrs. Olivares-Urueta began her work in higher education at the University of Oklahoma working with Latino Students in the office of Student Life and later recruiting underrepresented students for the university through the office of Diversity Enrichment. Attention High School Juniors and Seniors- College Fair Time

I hope that my blog will also serve as a place for high school students to come for information in planning their future.  Collegiate Possibilities is for everyone: students, parents, administrators, faculty, etc.  This is a place to share the important tools and resources for YOU to be successful.

The months of October and November are important for high school students.  Why?  Because this is the time to start talking to college recruiters, finding scholarships, and make early decisions.  Check with your counselor this week to find out when and where your local college fairs are because they are different in every city.

A few questions to consider before you go to a local college fair:

• Do I want to go to a 4 or 2 year institution?
• How far away do I want to go?
• What do I want to major in or study?
• What environment do I want to live in? Cities vs. Small College Towns AND Dorms vs. Off-campus
• Do I want to participate in sports, fine arts, special organizations?
• Do I want to study abroad?

These questions are important to consider because the school you think you want to attend isn't the one that offers the best options for what you want to do.  For example, not all institutions offer fashion, aerospace engineering, or non-profit services.  Not all institutions have housing options.  And not all institutions allow you to participate in study abroad to Thailand or allow for anyone to tryout for ballet.

Also, just because you talk to a recruiter, does not mean you are committed to attend that institution.  So meet new people at the college fair, talk to a school that you would never think to go to, and collect all those brochures because this is just the beginning... the next step is visiting the schools.

Your Health is Important

Whether you're taking classes online or in a classroom, the likelihood of you getting sick while your studying is very high.  Other than falling ill because of other people being sick, fatigue and sleep deprivation can cause you to feel "under the weather".  Take charge and plan what you need to do so you can get the sleep needed to do all the other things in your life and be a successful student.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that "Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and depression." and "students who are working or studying long hours may experience episodes of sleep deprivation."  Be aware of the signs that you aren't getting enough rest and try you're best to get 6-8 hours of sleep.  What saved me in college?- Nap Time!  Make time to take a 15-30 minute rest when you have the additional time.  Late night studying, student organization events, and additional shenanigans caused me to stay up late (2-3 a.m.).  

CDC Quick Tips:

• Avoid stimulants like caffeine and nicotine. The stimulating effects of caffeine in coffee, colas, teas, and chocolate can take as long as 8 hours to wear off fully.
• Have a good sleeping environment. Get rid of anything that might distract you from sleep, such as noises or bright lights.
• Stick to a sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on the weekends.
• See your health provider if you continue to have trouble sleeping.
• Avoid pulling an all-nighter to study.

Tired Already? Lesson Three: Prioritize

Labor Day weekend has come and gone... and you're already looking forward to Thanksgiving Break.  It's natural to have this overwhelming feeling at the beginning of the semester.  Whether you're a freshmen or returning student, it's important to be aware of this overwhelming feeling and what it can turn into if you don't address it now.

Avoid putting off assignments this early in the game.  It's easy to say now, "I don't have to read that now, I have 3 weeks until my exam" or "That project is due at the end of the semester, I'll start working on it next month".  Putting off too much can cause you to be flooded with work at the last minute and then you're lost in a sea of assignments, readings, projects, meetings, and MESS.

My Lesson Three: Prioritize
I know you want to go to this weekend's football game or party, you want to have dinner or drinks with your friends, and you want to plan a quick trip with your friends... BUT PRIORITIZE.  Buy a planner and back plan from exams and due dates.  Sometimes you need to pass on the fun things.  Trust me, I'm still sad I didn't go to New Orleans for that one weekend with my friends who came back with a ton of great stories.  But I was able to get a head and not stress later.  Get things done NOW so you don't suffer LATER or lose sleep.  And sleep is a priority!  So is eating, getting some exercise, and enjoying life.  But make a plan and stick to it as much as you can.  You're grades will reflect this later.

Lesson Two: Meet People

College is not a solo journey if you really want to be successful.  I've always advised students taking classes on a campus to meet new people.  In each of your classes, you should get contact information from at least two classmates (cell number, email, Facebook, etc).  If you miss a class, don't understand, leave the room, or just don't get it you'll have at least two people who may be able to help you.

Who else should you know?  Get to know your advisor (faculty or staff member that guides you through your academic career) because this individual will answer so many questions.  Such as, when would be the best time to study abroad, do you know somebody I can intern with, or which classes should I take when.  Whether you're going to class online or in a classroom; everyone has access to an advisor, mentor, or guidance counselor.

Other GREAT PEOPLE on your campus:

• Financial Aid, Disability Services, and Register/Records Office Staff: Great resources who sometimes don't get any "love" from students except for when they are needed; get to know the staff in these offices
• Career Services/Development, Study Abroad, Counseling: The staff in these offices can assist you in thinking outside the box; what possibilities do you have while in school to prepare you for the future?
• Campus Life: Student organizations, campus ministry, Greek life, the Student Union, etc.  Get involved! Make friends and get to know what the upperclassmen say about what's happening on campus and in the classroom
• School Administration: Whether it's your University President, area Dean, or Provost; these individuals want to meet students, hear your concerns, and build relationships too!  So setup an appointment and get to know them.

Why Kristin?

You're probably asking yourself, why should I listen to Kristin and not my campus staff and faculty?  Really I'm not asking you to only stop here for advice, but use ALL the people on your campus.  As a person who attended a large public university, there is nothing more important that asking for help from EVERYBODY- staff, faculty, administrators, other students, alumni...  You can read my bio on the side panel, but for over the past decade I have learned from my mistakes and the mistakes of others; advised students of all ages going through similar concerns; and loved almost every moment of my experiences (there are hard times during school).  Since leaving higher education in 2009, I've still taken time to help former students, friends wanting to go back to school, and anyone who is confused on their educational journey.  This is one of my passion.

Lesson One- My biggest advice: Get Documentation.  I don't answer to your institution, so you can't say "Because I learned on a blog this was possible, so that's why you should ...".
What needs to be documented (just a few examples):

• Doctor/Medical/Counseling Appointments (for absences, Disability Offices, and other purposes)
• Approval of Transfer courses or Course Substitutions (if somebody says you can do it, get their signature and contact information; and make sure you asked the RIGHT person)
• E-mails for Exceptions or Approvals (you may need to support why you did something to another person or department chair)
• Receipts of Payment (there can always be errors, so keep track of what you paid for and who assisted you)

Your education is important, but you have a responsibility to make these possibilities a reality.

The first week of college is always full of excitement, confusion, energy, and stress.  Do you know where you're going?  Who will I eat lunch with?  Did my book come in on time?  Do I have "that" professor?  Where do I park?  Did I pick the right major?  Will I have a date next week?  Put the unknown behind you and really think about what matters.  This blog will address these and many more questions, because there are so much possibilities during your time in college.  Whether going back to school after years or entering as a freshmen; you all have the same possibilities.  Major changes, transferring to a new school, studying abroad, joining an organization.... there's so much to do and discovering who you are part of the excitement.  And let me tell you, this "discovering" doesn't just happen in the classroom.  So get excited, meet new people, and plan ahead... Welcome or Welcome Back!
